The REP Presents Pittsburgh Premiere of Mojo
The REP, Point Park University's professional theatre company, presents the Pittsburgh premiere of Jez Butterworth's play Mojo at the Pittsburgh Playhouse Friday, May 29 through June 14 with a preview performance open to the public on Thursday, May 28; Kim Martin directs.
"The whole joint sparkles like the briny deep" at Ezra's Atlantic. Beneath the sequined surface of this seedy London watering hole, however, sharks are circling. It's 1958, and local singing and dancing sensation Silver Johnny has potential to rival Elvis as a teen idol. The jukebox dreams of the minnows who discovered him seem about to come true. Then their leader goes to pieces. Literally. He's killed and chopped in half by a rival promoter, and the rest of the chums may be next. As they barricade themselves inside the club, heads swimming in a sea of paranoia and mistrust, threats of bloodshed and betrayal burst forth like rock-n-roll riffs. Survival may depend on which of these little fish has the biggest bite. MORE...

Conservatory Faculty Present Captivating Line-Up for Spring Concert
The Conservatory Dance Company, Point Park University's student dance company, presents On the Move, a concert of original dance pieces choreographed by several of Point Park's most accomplished dance faculty. On the Move opens Thursday, April 9 and runs through Saturday, April 11 at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, the performing arts center of Point Park University in Oakland. This year's concert is comprised five highly engaging works. Doug Bentz presents the premiere of Transmigration of Souls, a distinctly passionate and spiritually metaphorical expression of the essence of the human spirit as it leaves the body. The work is set to "On the Transmigration of Souls" by John Adams. Adams composed the piece in 2002 for the New York Philharmonic as a commemoration of the first anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks; it received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Music and won a rare "triple crown" at the Grammy's, including Best Classical Recording, Best Orchestral Performance and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Nicolas Petrov presents Fantasia with music by Jose Serebrier, featuring a projection of Salvador Dali's painting, "Kiss." It is a revival of a ballet choreographed in 1976 for Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre which opened in Heinz Hall the same year. The story follows a simple love triangle between two men and a woman in which the young girl is in love with a young man who is drafted to Vietnam. As time passes, the girl gets involved with another young man, who is also drafted. They both return when the war is over and the young girl has to choose between the two. Peter LeBreton Merz presents Fingerspitzengefuhl, meaning "instinctive knowledge." The piece is an exploration of how some knowledge seems to pass from person to person without any communication. Bentz and Merz are joined by Kiesha Lalama-White's Auspicious Encounters, an exploration of the fortunate encounters that we embrace in our lives, and an energetic, explosive jazz piece by Ron Tassone currently titled Kooza. |
